Coats for Kids, Inc., Observes 34th Annual Fundraiser and Golf Scramble on Monday. July 21
For 34 years, the members of the Egyptian Building and Construction Trades Council have raised money to help school children across Southern Illinois purchase coats and other clothing items through the Coats for Kids, Inc. organization. Once again, they are hosting their Coats for Kids Golf Scramble this Monday, July 21, 2025. Golfers will again gather at the Franklin County Country Club south of West Frankfort for this good cause with registration beginning at 7 a.m. and the scramble running from 8 a.m. to just after 12 noon.
As a steady presence in the area, Coats for Kids, Inc., through the Egyptian Building Trades, has raised over $654,897 to meet the clothing needs of over 12,3178 children. Schools participate in the program by identifying kids to their Regional Office of Education, who then shop for the new coats and other clothing items for the students.
The program is administered by three Regional Superintendent of Schools who cover an 18-county area – Lorie LeQuatte (ROE #21: Franklin-Johnson-Massac-Williamson Counties), Matthew Hickam (ROE #30: Alexander-Jackson-Perry-Pulaski-Union Counties), and Dr. Beth Rister (ROE #20: Edwards-Gallatin-Hamilton-Hardin- Pope-Saline-Wabash-Wayne-White Counties) – who distribute the funds raised in the program and cover administrative and overhead costs.
Although the golf event is Monday, tax deductible contributions can still be made by calling ROE #21 at (618) 438-9711.
In late fall, teachers and school staff in schools across the area request the coats and clothing for children in need in their schools and then go shopping for them. This has been an important program for these kids for over a generation.
“We continue to see the generosity of the working men and women of organized labor and the Egyptian Building Trades across the region year after year as they give for this long running program,” said Coats for Kids, Inc., President Matt Donkin. “The care they show is one of those things that makes this region special.”
