A thorough pre-testing evaluation is completed prior to the student's beginning phase to the COPE educational program. At the completion of their term at COPE, the students will be given a post test to evaluate their progress and growth. Computers are available to the students and the low teacher-student ratio allows for individualized instruction.
AGGRESSION REPLACEMENT TRAINING (A.R.T.) is provided on a daily basis and is supplemented by a counselor from the Teen Action Program (TAP) who is a staff member of the Youth Services Program in Jackson County. This instruction and/or group discussion includes: the development of conflict resolution skills, anger control, empathy training, social and life skills training. A.R.T. is designed to help students become more responsible and accountable for their actions.
COMMUNITY SERVICE is an important part of the program. Students have the opportunity to participate in community service projects. These projects include serving meals to the senior citizens, working at the historical society, organizing items at the Salvation Army, and providing assistance to local service organizations during the holidays. The COPE Safe School has adopted areas in Jackson and Perry counties for beautification projects. Students achieve a sense of pride and higher self esteem by their involvement in these community projects.
