Q: Do I have to be fingerprinted?

- All new bus drivers have to be finger printed.
- Must be 21 years of age or older
- Must possess a valid driver's license which has not been revoked or suspended in the three years immediately prior to the date of the application
- Initial classroom course in school bus safety and first aid must be completed prior to application
- Must pass a driving test and written test at Secretary of State's office
- Applicants must successfully pass an Illinois specific fingerprint base criminal background check, which will be forwarded to the F.B.I.
- Pass a physical examination including tests for drug and alcoholism
- School bus drivers must go through the reapplication process each year
- Drivers will be required to complete an annual medical exam, including drug and alcohol tests
- Before reapplying, the applicant must also complete a refresher course as outlined by the State Board of Education
- At the time of reapplication, the employer must certify the completion of an annual medical exam, including test for drugs and alcohol, and the refresher training.
- The cost of the permit is $6.00 New applicants will complete testing at a Driver Services Facility and will be issued a permit at that time. Those reapplying may simply mail their check or money order, along with the completed employer certification to the School Bus Safety Section in Springfield. It will not be necessary to go to a Driver Services Facility to reapply. Initial training is $4.00 and refresher training fees are $6.00 and are payable to the Regional Office of Education.
